I was just going through my old blog posts, cleaning things up a bit by narrowing my categories and resizing my photos, when I noticed all the photos from the time in the United Kingdom and Ireland were never posted. Probably the events that lead up to that time in my life was, and sometimes continues to be, difficult to think about so I left them out. But now seems like a good time to revisit that time in my life.
I'll start with food, since food was one of the surprises of my time. It was difficult to get used to British food and the lack of availability of fresh food in the north. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy what I ate, but the choices were limited and difficult to find lighter fare. A girl can only have so many sticky toffee puddings!
Scotland was the biggest surprise. I had heard from countless people that Scottish food is terrible, that everything is just deep fried, but I found food in Scotland to be beautifully done, with a lot of creativity, especially in Edinburgh. There must have been a food renaissance at some point, because the food in Scotland was the best we had in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Irish food we enjoyed as well. After having rather rubbery potatoes in Northumberland, the Irish variety was much welcomed.
