I used to not be a big planner when it came to travel, but that quickly changed after a last minute decision to fly into Milan ended with disappointment when I learned that reservations needed to be made two weeks in advance to see the Last Supper. Plus, when I realized I didn't actually see many sights in Spain even though I've been three times to three different parts of the country.
Ever since then I've learned the joys of travel planning. I also think my past career turned me into a Type A personality when it comes to organizing and planning. Since there are so many haphazard sources of information all across the internet, I've found some sort of sick joy out of searching for the best tips. I've then shared those tips over and over again, but just realized, why not post some of them here, duh!
So without much further ado, I'll start with some simple ones first. I originally wrote this for a website, but am reposting here.
Where to get the best FREE views of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Paris can get expensive when you are traveling with family, but here are three places where you can get three different views of the Eiffel Tower without having to pay to go up Montparnasse.
1. The roof of Galeries Lafayette. Worth visiting just for the gorgeous stained glass domes and drool worthy food hall, but go all the way up to the roof to catch a free view of the Eiffel Tower.
2. Champ de Mars. Once you have the distant above ground view of Eiffel Tower, you probably want something closer. If you approach the Eiffel Tower from the Champ de Mars you can get the classic photo of yourself, your friends, your family, etc... with the Eiffel Tower in the background.
3. Trocadero. This is the spot to sit and wait for the lights to go on as the sun begins to set. Don't expect romance since this is Paris' worst kept secret. It does get crowded, but the "wow" moment of watching the lights go on is much more appreciated with a crowd of admirers.
BONUS
For a great view of the Cathedral Notre Dame, go to the roof of the Museum of the Arab World. An added bonus to this tip is that the mechanical shutters on this building are fascinating and beautiful.
