Daniele and I had the hardest time deciding between India and Egypt for our honeymoon, but in the end we chose India!
That means 2 weeks in India and 1 week in our undisclosed location. We may need an alternate for that 1 week, which has us eyeing Sri Lanka or the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
As for the 2 weeks in India, we're having a hard time narrowing down where we want to go.
We are choosing two different destinations each. One monument that takes only a day to visit, and one location that takes longer to enjoy. New Delhi will be our base, so we'll have pockets of time there.
My monument choice is the Golden Temple in Amritsar. It will be a quick stop, and when I say quick, I mean quick. All the flights we have seen have us arriving early morning in New Delhi from San Francisco, which lets us catch an early flight from New Delhi to Amritsar. After a day trip, an overnight train. Luckily this isn't my first time in India. Not a lot of surprises regarding how to get around - flights, trains, private car, taxi, local buses, boats, motorcycles, I've done them all in India.
Daniele's monument pick is the Taj Mahal in Agra. No complaints from me, I loved the Taj Mahal and welcome a second visit.
My second location is Varanasi. I planned on visiting during my last trip to India, but when I found out my travel dates coincided with Kumbh Mela, I didn't think it would be the most relaxed time to go as a solo traveler. I don't regret missing the Kumbh Mela, but I do regret missing Varanasi.
Daniele's second choice is where we are hitting a wall. Daniele already said no to Rajasthan and Kerala, since I've already been, but there are so many other options that it's hard to narrow down.

One Of The Tamer Pictures I Found Of Kumbh Mela, Via An Indian Escape |
I found a great India based start up that has been the most helpful in inspiring us about locations in India, but it keeps giving us more options! If anyone is curious, check out Thrillophilia. The site is beautifully designed with great inspirational trips, information on different locations, and access to tours at more local prices for those who like to take a tour. I have no involvement with them, I just found the site so much more helpful than a lot of blog posts and travel forums that keep recommending the same handful of places in India.
This is why we're having such a hard time deciding where our final location will be in India. We've already chosen some very touristic places, so we want to find one more location that is a little different. We have time to figure this out since we won't be taking this trip after Daniele's trip to Spain next week and my trip to Alaska this summer. Whatever we choose, it will be a lot of fun!
