In the spirit of learning new skills and increasing my knowledge about things I've always been curious about, here's a great video about learning. Josh Kaufman has found that in order to learn a subject, going from no knowledge on a subject to being competent takes about 20 hours. That is equal to roughly 45 minutes a day for 1 month with a few days to spare. That's a pretty grounded idea that when learning new skills, give it a month with focused learning 45 minutes a day to get to the point where you feel like you know what you are doing well. Not expert level, but well. That's pretty cool. It's similar to the idea that it takes 3 weeks to make something a habit, I'm sure there is research that shows why the similarity between the two ideas.
Of course as with learning any skill, just spending time doesn't make it effective learning. It takes deliberate use of that time that really counts. See the rest of what Josh mentions below in his TedxTalk.
