After I posted the photos from my time in the United Kingdom, I wanted to find the pictures I took with my phone of the Tyne Tunnel. I felt like the photo I posted from Wikipedia did not show just how absolutely terrifying the tunnel really is. Seriously, if I had to go down that tunnel by myself I'd be completely and utterly freaked out.
The tunnels were built in 1951 and are 200 feet long and the wooden escalators are the longest in the world. It looks like shortly after Daniele and I were there, the tunnels have been closed for retrofitting. I can't find information, but I would not be surprised if those tunnels were used for petty crimes and other more devious activities. They gave both of us such a weird vibe, we really could not wait to get out of there.
In retrospect, it's not that different from the London tube walkways between platforms. I'm pretty sure I've been in a tunnel similar enough at Victoria Station, but since these tunnels were completely empty probably added to that creepy feel.
